At the age of 8, my uncle gifted me a small fish tank with a few tropical fish. Little did I know that this would be the beginning of a lifelong hobby. From goldfish to marine fish, I have always had a fascination with keeping fish.
Even after all these years, I find myself drawn to any kind of fish tank. There's just something about the sight of life thriving in a body of water that captivates people. It's not just me; many others find water fascinating and find watching fish swimming around in a tank to be a calming and enjoyable experience.
During my second job in the City of London, an unexpected email from the CEO of the financial institution I worked for landed in my inbox, it was sent out to all the employees inquiring about anyone with experience in keeping fish, he expressed interest in setting up an aquarium in the main reception area.
I couldn't believe my luck! I spent the rest of the day meticulously preparing a presentation on the different types of fish, their habitats, costs, and ongoing maintenance requirements.
Within 10 minutes of sending the presentation to the CEO's PA, I received a call requesting a meeting with the CEO the following day. Excitedly, I was booked in for an early morning appointment with him.
Over the next six months, armed with an unlimited company credit card and access to an executive chauffeuring service, I scoured fish shops throughout London to create a breath-taking marine tank for the company's main reception area. Although I was compensated with a gift of my choice (thanks to the graciousness of the CEO's PA, who let me choose an Xbox with all the latest games and features), the real reward was being able to do what I truly loved and found joy in.
After leaving the firm, I arranged for a local company to take over the ongoing maintenance of the tank. It never occurred to me that my passion for fish-keeping could be turned into a full-time career. I was fresh out of University and was determined to succeed in the world of finance, with my sights set on becoming a trader in the City of London.
Fast forward 18 years, I am now happily married to a wonderful wife and blessed with three amazing children, yet my love for fish-keeping never waned. Throughout the years, I have always had a fish tank in my home, helping friends and family setup all sorts of tanks along the way.
Career-wise, I was able to achieve my dream of becoming a trader in the City of London before eventually leaving to join my family's property business. It was there that I had the opportunity to set up a tank in my own office.
My office visitors are always captivated by the mesmerizing sight of my marine tank, to the point where they often become momentarily distracted from their original purpose of coming in and express their amazement. The beauty of the tank is so universal that it attracts people of all ages, from children to the elderly, who can't seem to take their eyes off it. While walking past my office one day, a nearby dentist saw my marine tank through the window and decided to come in. He asked me if I could provide him with the details of the company that had set up and maintained my tank. When I informed him that it was actually my own work, he was incredulous and couldn't believe it. He then invited me to his practice to help set up his own tank.
